"Arimoto Tokyo"

Shinya Arimoto est né à Osaka en 1971. Il est diplômé en arts visuels de l'université d'Osaka. Epris de paysages urbains, il s'intéresse plus précisément à leurs habitants, traitant sur un pied d'égalité les sans-abri, les marginaux et M. Tout-le-monde. En cela, il s'inscrit dans la lignée des Américains Diane Arbus, Qarry Winogrand, Lee Friedlander ou Bruce Davidson, qui, dès les années 1960, ont fait descendre la photographie dans la rue. Mais le déclic photographique lui est venu à la lecture de Tokyo. 1970-1985, de son compatriote photographe Naito Masatoshi (né en 1938). Plongée en noir et blanc dans une capitale japonaise miséreuse et déglinguée, ce livre choc est aujourd'hui culte. Depuis 2006, Shinya Arimoto vit et travaille à Tokyo, où il a ouvert son propre espace d'exposition, Totem Pôle Photo Qallery Shinya Arimoto arpente le bitume dans le seul but de déclencher l'obturateur de son appareil photo, afin de révéler les Tokyoïtes tels qu'ils sont, tels qu'ils vivent. Cinq ans lui ont été nécessaires pour mener à bien (a série présentée ici. Ses images prennent le pouls d'une ville dopée à l'énergie, mais elles révèlent également le désordre, la confusion et le chaos qui peuvent s'emparer de ses trottoirs. Elles dégagent pourtant une impression d'étrange tranquillité. C'est tout le talent de Shinya Arimoto d'aller ainsi à larencontre de personnes à peine remarquées, voire délibérément ignorées. Par son approche respectueuse, son attention non feinte, il donne à voir le plus profond de leur être.

Born in Osaka in 1971, Shinya Arimoto holds a degree in Visual Arts from Osaka University. His interest in cityscapes hinges, in fact, on their inhabitants - the homeless,the marginal,the 'average Joe' - ail of whom he accepts as equals, in the tradition of Americans like Diane Arbus, Qarry Winogrand, Lee Friedlander and Bruce Davidson, who took photography to the street in the 1960s. Things fell into place for him when he reads Tokyo: 1970-1985 by Japanese photographer Naito Masatoshi (b. 1938). A bombshell in black & white, this portrait of a paupertsed, broken-down capital is now a cuit book. Since 2006 Shinya Arimoto has been living and working in Tokyo, where he also runs his own Totem Pôle Photo Qallery. Shinya Arimoto's sole aim as he paces the streets of Tokyo is to show the city's inhabitants living their everyday lives. The séries presented here was five years in the making. the puise of a city high on its own energy, at the same time as they expose its disorder, confusion and chaos. And yet they emanate a strange tranquitlity. Arimoto has a gift for making contact with people who go ail but unnoticed, when they are not frankly ignored. Through his respect and unfeigned consideration he reveals the deepest recesses of their being.
